OF MARCH 26, 2009 ANNUAL ASSESSMENT MEETING WITH ENTERGY NUCLEAR OPERATIONS, INC.

On March 26, from 6:00 pm to 10:30 pm, an Annual Assessment Meeting was conducted at the Hilton Garden Inn in Plymouth, Massachusetts, between the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and Entergy Nuclear Operations, Inc. (Entergy). The NRC requested the meeting with Entergy management to discuss the NRC=s assessment of the safety performance of Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station for the calendar year 2008.

The NRC presented and discussed its assessment of the safety performance of Pilgrim for the period between January 1 through December 31, 2008. The NRC presentation included information on the Reactor Oversight Process (ROP), summary of national performance assessment results, and the results of NRC=s performance assessment for Pilgrim. As part of this regulatory performance meeting, Entergy presented its perspective regarding the plant=s performance and operational goals for 2009.

The public was invited to observe this meeting. Prior to the meeting the public was invited to speak one on one with the resident inspectors and regional staff and at the end of the meeting between the NRC and Entergy, public attendees were offered the opportunity to communicate with the NRC regarding Entergy=s performance at Pilgrim and the role of the agency in ensuring safe plant operations. Questions from the public and the local media were also addressed by the NRC.

  • The staff determined that Entergy had recognized the cross-cutting theme and had taken or scheduled to take appropriate corrective actions.
  • The NRC will monitor Entergys progress in the area of procedure adequacy through the baseline inspection program.
