Conference Call with Staff for Vermont Senators Jeffords and Leahy On January 15, 2003, NRC staff from NRR, Region I, and OCA held a conference call with staff members for Vermont Senators Jeffords and Leahy to discuss issues related to extended power uprates (EPUs). The call was requested, in part, due to requests from the Senators' constituents for an independent safety assessment of Vermont Yankee (VY) due to public concerns regarding Entergy's EPU amendment request dated September 10, 2003. The major topics discussed were:

• process used by the NRC to perform EPU reviews;

• status of the NRC's review of the VY EPU amendment request;

• crediting containment overpressure for net positive suction head;

• Maine Yankee ISA and why ISA is not needed at VY;

• inspections planned at VY related to EPU; and

• independence in various NRC processes.
