The contract between Entergy Nuclear Vermont Yankee and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union Local 300 Unit 8 is set to expire at midnight on Thursday, August 19. Workers have authorized a strike to begin at 12:01 on Friday, August 20.

The two sides met with a federal mediator twice last week. There are numerous sticking points. Thy'll all sit down again tomorrow and Thursday in hopes of reaching an agreement.

A strike would include licensed reactor operators, auxiliary operators, instrument and control technicians, chemistry techs, electricians, mechanics, work planners, and control specialists. Security is not included.

VY has put together extensive contingency plans to continue operating during a potential strike. NRC inspectors have reviewed those plans and have found them to be acceptable.

Inspectors will continue reviewing the plans, as the situation evolves.

The contingency plans call for using only VY employees during the first several weeks, with the company reevaluating its needs if a strike were to continue beyond that.

VY managers will begin shadowing workers tomorrow in preparation for taking over in the event of a strike. Any person who works as a licensed operator would be licensed by the NRC to operated VY.

News reports indicate the union has raised issues with the NRC. We are reviewing those issues.
