Document Control Desk July 15, 2005 Page 2 Reouested Information Your 90-day response indicated that your analysis will be completed by September 1, 2005, but did not discuss the evaluation of chemical and downstream effects. Although the GL did not specifically request that the evaluation of chemical and downstream effects be discussed in the 90-day response, please discuss your plans and schedule for evaluiating chemical and downstream effects and verify i whether your September 1, 2005, response will include an evaluation of these effects.

Ginna LLC's Response Ginna LLC is currently pursuing an "active" self-cleaning strainer as part of our GL 2004-04 resolution.

One of the design criteria Ginna LLC has established with the vendor of the self-cleaning strainer is for the self-cleaning strainer to be capable of keeping the active strainer flow clean in the event chemical precipitation occurs. Preliminary testing done in January 2005 indicates that this criterion can be easily met. A final testing that meets the quality standards of Ginna LLC is currently scheduled to occur in the summer of 2005. At this time, it is unknown whether the vendor report documenting the results of this testing will be available in time to be included in the September 1, 2005 response to the Generic Letter.

As part of the design evaluation of the replacement sump strainer, Ginna LLC will also document that the replacement strainer adequately maintains the functionality of the Emergency Core Cooling System/Reactor Coolant System downstream components.. To determine the bypass flow from the active strainer, a flow test that meets the Ginna LLC quality standard will be performed by the vendor. This testing is also scheduled to occur in the summer of 2005, and again published results may not be available in time to support the September 1, 2005 Generic Letter response. Following completion of the bypass flow test, the methodologies of NEI 04-07 and WCAP-16406-P will be used to evaluate the downstream effects of debris bypass.

The completion date to document the work described above is scheduled for December 30, 2005.
