Vermont Yankee has completed the robotic inspection of the spent fuel pool floor under and around the spent fuel racks. The inspection scope was developed by the special investigation team with the goal of establishing a high degree of confidence that pins were or were not in the spent fuel pool.
This robotic inspection, which looked under the spent fuel racks, augments the manual camera inspection performed earlier in the week that examined the floor area adjacent to the spent fuel racks and other storage containers in the pool.
The inspection specifically focused on the areas of the pool adjacent to the locations that the fuel pin storage container had occupied. If the container had accidentally been emptied the highest probability location would be within a few feet of the container location.
The camera images were observed by both Vermont Yankee experienced personnel and personnel experienced in the spent fuel pool searches at other nuclear facilities.
No fuel pin segments were observed. Additional reviews of the video tapes will be performed by the investigation team and experienced reactor engineering personnel to provide added assurance that the conclusion concerning the existence of the pins is correct. Based on these additional reviews and evaluations of the tapes additional camera inspections may be performed.
