Committed to Nuclear Excellence Palisades Nuclear Plant Operated by Nuclear Management Company, LLC March 24, 2003 U S Nuclear Regulatory Commission ATTN: Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555-0001 PALISADES NUCLEAR PLANT DOCKET 50-255 LICENSE No. DPR-20 SQUG OUTLIER RESOLUTION - REVISION OF COMMITMENT By letter dated January 15, 2002, Nuclear Management Company, LLC (NMC) provided a revision to a previously made commitment regarding the disposition of unresolved safety issue (USI) A-46 at Palisades.
NMC is in the final phase of resolution of USI A-46 at Palisades. The last item of resolution is the safety injection refueling water (SIRW) storage tank. Resolution of the SIRW storage tank issue has evolved from the determination that the tank cannot be qualified or economically repaired per the generic implementation procedure 2 (GIP-2) methodology. Therefore an alternative path, to ensure sufficient primary coolant system inventory following a seismic event, has been subject to qualification per the GIP-2 methodology.
Two field modifications are required to support the alternate path. One of the modifications is being implemented during the Palisades 2003 refueling outage. The final modification will be completed on-line, shortly following the refueling outage.
Therefore, NMC is revising the previously made commitment, as noted on the following page.

SUMMARY
OF COMMITMENTS Existing commitment made January 15, 2002:
Nuclear Management Company will disposition all USI A-46 outliers at Palisades before the end of the next refueling outage.
Revised Commitment:
Nuclear Management Company will disposition all USI A-46 outliers at Palisades, including the completion of all modifications, and provide this information to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission by July 1, 2003.
