Dear Dr. Grace:

Attached is Supplement 1 to the Duke Power response to NRC Compliance Bulletin No. 87-02. The initial Duke response to this bulletin was originally submit ted as an enclosure to my letter dited January 12, 1988.

Supplement 1 consists of partial test results for all the 121 fastener samples selected under the provisions of Bulletin 87-02. Only the Charpy Impact Tests of four samples remains to be completed before we can finalize our submittal of test results.

Additional engineering evaluation is required for 23 test samples since our investigation of these (tabulated and described on Pages 3-4 of the attachment)

indicated deviations from specifications.

Despite the deviations identified during the testing we do not have a history of problems felt to be directly traceable to fasteners.

Our fastener experience is based upon approximately 55 unit-years of nuclear station operation.

Furthermore, the deviations listed on Pages 3-4 involve replacement fasteners procured since initial unit operation.

We continue to feel the original fastener spe cification program used during the design and construction of Duke's nuclear stations was sound.

The additional evaluation mentioned above creates the need for a further ex tension of time before we can complete our full response.

This possibility was indicated in my January 12 letter.

Barring any significant findings we will complete our response to Bulletin 87-02 by April 11, 1988.

This final response will contain the results of our evaluation of the deviations and a description of the subsequent actions to be taken as a result of our fastener investigation.
