Dear Commissioners and Staff:
In November 2008, PG&E's team of in-house geoscientists, working with the U.S.
Geological Survey as part of its Long Term Seismic Program at Diablo Canyon Power Plant, identified a new fault zone - the Shoreline Fault. PG&E's initial sensitivity study showed that the plant had adequate seismic margin to withstand the ground motions from the Shoreline Fault. In early 2009, the NRC independently studied the potential impact of the Shoreline Fault and concluded the plant had adequate seismic margin.
During 2009 and 2010, PG&E collected and reviewed additional data on the Shoreline Fault using seismic imaging and mapping and other advanced technology.
PG&E stated in a meeting with the NRC on January 5, 2010, that the final Shoreline Fault report would be completed by the end of 2010. PG&E has been working to submit the final Shoreline Fault report to the NRC this week, but feels additional time is necessary to ensure the completeness of the report. We anticipate the final report will be available for your review during the week of January 3, 2011.
