SUBJECT:

Request for Extension to the 3-Month Response to Generic Letter 2008-01 Arkansas Nuclear One, Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-313, 50-368, and 72-13 (ISFSI)

License Nos. DPR-51 and NPF-6

REFERENCE:

NRC Generic Letter 2008-01: Managing Gas Accumulation in Emergency Core Cooling, Decay Heat Removal, and Containment Spray Systems (0CNA010801 dated January 11, 2008)

Dear Sir or Madam:

The reference letter requires that within 9 months of the date of issuance of Generic Letter (GL) 2008-01, each addressee is to submit a written response consistent with the requested actions and information contained in the GL. If an addressee cannot meet the requested response date, the addressee shall provide a response within 3 months of the date of the GL and is requested to describe the alternative course of action that that will taken. This includes the basis for the acceptability of the proposed alternative course of action.

In discussions between the industry and the NRC, there appears to have been some confusion as to the extent needed to provide a response to the GL. As part of the clarifications, the NRC has provided guidance on requesting an extension to the due date for the 3-month response described above.

On April 8, 2008, members of the Licensing and Engineering staff at Arkansas Nuclear One (ANO) called Mr. Jerry Wermiel of the NRC to request an additional 30 days to complete the 3-month response for ANO. The basis for the ANO request is the unanticipated additional action(s) (i.e., completion of system walkdowns). Mr. Wermiel stated that the request was acceptable. The new proposed due date for the ANO 3-month response is May 11, 2008.
