TheseIP-2packagesarerequiredby49CFR173.411tomeetthegeneralrequirements of49CFR173.410andmustpreventlossordispersal ofradioactive contentsorsignificant increases intheexternalradiation doserateswhensubjected tothetestsprescribed in49CFR173.465(c)and(d),namely,1-footdropandcompression tests.The1-footdroptestrequiresthatthepackagebedroppedinthemostvulnerable orientation sothatthemaximumdamageiscaused.Thespecialprocedures usedtohandlethesteamgenerators duringtransportation providesignificant increases insafetyoveruncontrolled shipments, andprovidecontrolstopreventthesteamgenerators frombeingdroppedinanarbitrary orientation.

Fromthetimethepackagesarereadyforshipmenttothetimetheyarriveintheburialtrenchtheyarepermanently tiedtoapairofsaddles.Eachsaddleisboltedtoamassiveframewhich,inturn,issecuredtoaselfpropelled modulartransporter (seeFigure1fora.schematic ofthetie-down).

Thesteamgenerators areraisedandloweredonthecribbingusingthese&ames.Duringthisoperation theassemblyisraisedbyonlyafewinchesabovethesupportpoints.Therefore, theonlyprobabledropthatcouldoccurisadropoftheassemblybyafewinchesoverthecribbing-pile.

BecauseoftheQexibility ofthesupport-kame andthecribbingpileinvolvedinthisdrop,suchadropwillhaveaminoreffectonthesteamgenerator.

Amuchmoreseveredrophasbeenpostulated foranalyzing thesteamgenerator forthecompliance withtheregulatory requirement.

Inthisscenario, thesteamgenerator isdroppedonarigidsurfacefromaheightof1-footintheorientation itistransported.

Sincethediameteroftheprimarysideofthesteamgenerators issmallerthanthatofthesecondary-side, suchadropwouldresultinaninitialimpactonthesecondary sideand-asecondimpact(slap-down) ontheprimarysideofthesegenerators.

Itshouldbenotedthatforthetransportation, thesteamgenerators arerotatedinsuch'awaythatalltheirprotrusions arewellaboveanimaginary horizontal planedrawnatthebottomofthesteamgenerator (Figures2and3).Table1listsalltheprotrusions andtheircircumferential orientation fromaverticalplanepointingdownwards.

Thus,forthepostulated 1-footdrop,noneoftheprotrusions onthesteamgenerator wouldimpacttherigidsurface.Theprotrusion closesttotheimpactpointare,(1)thesecondary manway,and,(2)theprimaryinletnozzle.Thelowestpointofthesecondary manwayis4.52"abovethehorizontal plane(seeFigure4)andthatoftheprimaryinletnozzleis2.68"abovethehorizontal plane(seeFigure5).Theanalysisperformed tocomplytheregulatory requirement of1-footdropofthepackageonanunyielding surfaceshowsthatduetosuchadrop, e

Theallowable stressesareestablished basedonNRCRegulatory Guide7.6.Accordingly, theextremefiberstressontheshelldoesnotexceedtheultimatestrengthofthematerialandtheaveragestressoverthecross-section doesnotexceed70%oftheUltimatestrengthofthematerial.

(2)Duetothedeceleration experienced bythepackageduringthedrop,allthecapsandplugsofthenozzlesmaintaintheirsealing.ThestressesinthecapsandplugweldsarelimitedtotheAISCallowable values.(3)Thedeformation ofthepackagewouldnotbesufficient to'causeanyoftheprotrusions toimpacttheunyielding surface.Thecompression test,whichisrequiredtosimulatethelodingonthepackagewhentheyarestackedontopofanother,isnotapplicable fortheshipmentofthesteamgenerators becausethegenerators wouldbeshippedseparately andnoothercomponent isstackedontopofthesegenerators duringtheshipment.

AnalsisMethodolo Figure6showsthescenariousedinthedropanalysisofthesteamgenerator package.Thelowestpointofthepackage,i.e.,thesecondary shell,islocated1footabovetheunyielding surface.Thepackageisassumedtobehorizontal inorderthattheprimaryshellislocatedfarthestfromthesurface(conservative).

Thepackageisdropped&omthisorientation.

Thefirstimpacttakesplaceonthesecondary shell.Subsequently, becauseofthelocationofthecenterofgravityintheprimaryendofthesteamgenerator, theprimarysiderotatesaboutthetransition coneedgeandaslap-down takesplace.Theanalysescoverboththeprimaryandsecondary impacts.Theanalysisisperformed usingANSYSfiniteelementcomputerprogram.Thesteamgenerator ismodeledbytwo-dimensional beamelementsthatappropriately represent theareaandthemomentofinertiaofthesteamgenerator alongitslength.Theunyielding surfaceismodeledbyrigidsurfacesthatarecapableofreactingonlythecompressive load.ThelocalQexibility ofthesteamgenerator shellisincludedinthemodeland5%structural dampingisusedintheanalyses.

Themodelisanalyzedusingthelineartransient (time-history) optionofANSYSprogram.Thedisplacem'ent,

velocity, acceleration andreactionforcetime-history ateachnodeofthemodelareobtainedfortheinitialandsecondary impactofthesteamgenerator withtherigidsurface.Themaximumacceleration isestablished Romthelargestacceleration ofthesetime-histories.

Thelargestdeformation atanappropriate nodeisusedtoestablish whethertheprotrusions nearesttotherigidsurfacewouldcomeincontactwithitornot.Thelargestreactionforcesintheintheprimaryandsecondary shellsareusedinseparatelinearfiniteelementmodelstoobtainthestressesinthesteamgenerator.

Althoughitisshownthatnoneoftheprotrusions wouldmakeacontactwiththerigidsurface,theprotrusions closesttotherigidsurface(primaryoutletnozzleandsecondary manway)areanalyzedforthestressesunderthemaximumreactionforceobtainedfromthebeamfiniteelementmodel,described intheaboveparagraph.

ResultsTheresultsoftheanalysisshowthatthe'stresses inthesteamgenerator underl-footdroponarigidunyielding surface,arewithintheallowable values,thecapandplugweldsmaintaintheirintegrity, andthedeformation atthepointofimpactsissuchthatnoneoftheprotrusions makeacontactwiththerigidsurface.
