SECTION1INTRODUCTIONAND,SUPPLEMENTALINFORMATION c,4r INTRODUCTION1TheSusquehannaSteamElectricStationislocatedinSalemTownship,LuzerneCounty,Pennsylvania.ItisonthewestbankoftheSusquehannaRiver,8kmnortheastofBerwick.TheStationconsistsoftwoboilingwaterreactorgeneratingunits,eachwith105015lnetelectricalcapacity.ThereactorandgeneratorunitsweresuppliedbyGeneralElectric,whiletheBechtelCorporationservedasarchitect-engineerandconstructor.ConstructionoftheStationbeganintheearly1970s.FuelloadbeganinUnit1inJulyof1982.InitialcriticalitywasachievedintheUnit1reactoronSeptember10,1982.Thereactorreached100/powerforthefirsttimeonFebruary4,1983.CommercialoperationofUnit1isexpectedinthesecondquarterof1983.Unit2iscurrentlyapproximately75Xcomplete,andcommercialoperationisexpectedinlate1984.GaseouseffluentsarereleasedfromtheSusquehannaStationvia5rooftopventsonthereactorbuilding(seeFigure1).Eachventiscontinuouslymonitoredwhenoperational,andaprogramofperiodicsamplingiscon-ductedasspecifiedintheplantTechnicalSpecifications.Allliquideffluentsarereleasedinbatchmodeandaresampledandanalyzedpriortorelease.LiquideffluentsfromthesitearereleasedintothecoolingtowerblowdownlinefordilutionpriortoreleasetotheSusquehannaRiver.Normalblowdownlineflowratesareapproximately5000gpmperreactorunit.Thedilutedeffluentisaddedtotheriverbywayofaperforateddiffuserpipeplacedintheriverbed.Thediffuserservestorapidlyanduniformlymixthestationdischargewiththemainflowoftheriver.ThisreportpresentsasummaryofthequantitiesofradioactivematerialswhichwerereleasedfromtheSusquehannaUnit1reactorduringtheperiodfromSeptember1throughDecember31,1982,themeteorologywhichservedtodispersethegaseouseffluents,andthecalculateddoseswhichcanbeattributedtothesereleases.Inaddition,thisreportservesasamediumfornotifyingtheNuclearRegulatoryCommissionofchangestoPPSL'sOff-SiteDoseCalculationManual(ODCM)andsolidwasteProcessControlProgram(PCP).Table1containssupplementalinformationpertainingtoeffluentsfromSusquehanna.Includedareregulatorylimits,samplingandanalysismethods,andcharacterizationofthenumberanddurationofbatchandabnormalreleases.
