NIAGARAMOHAWKPOWERCORPORATIONNINEMILEPOINTNUCLEARSTATIONUNIT¹1Narrativeof0eratinExerienceAugust1978Theunitoperatedat80;8~ocapacityfactorwithanavailabilityof95.9~oforthemonth.Themonthbeganwithunitderatedto94~~CoreThermalPowerduetoscramreactivityconsiderations;theunitwasat94~apoweronAugust1.ControlRodwithdrawalswereusedtomaintainpower/flowpositionof94~~CTPwhenat0110onAugust3areactorscramoccurredduetohighfluxbecauseofaproblemencounteredwhiletestingMSIV's.Thescramwasattributedtoeitheroperatorerrororahung-uprelayinthetestcircuit.Manytestswereconductedbutnomalfunctionscouldbefound.Aplantstart-upwascommencedat1345withreactorcriticalat1650andonthelineat0655onAugust4.Continuedstartupandloadincreasesreaching450MWeby2230.ThefollowingdayafterawaitingXebuild-up,reducedloadto375MWeforsettingfinalrodpattern.Loadwassub-sequentlyincreasedto430MWeby1710,andloadincreasesatthepre-conditioningrateof3MWe/hrwereinitiated.OnMondayAugust7,stationoutputwasapproximately540MWewithpreconditioningrampratestillineffect.CompletedanLPRMcalibrationonAugust8,andreachedpreconditionedenvelopeto1711MWtonthe9thofAugust;alsostartedpowerrodwithdrawalstomaintain94~oCTP(553MWe).Reducedloadto500MWeat2230on11thofAugustinordertore-placesealson¹11motordrivenfeedwaterpump.Loadrecoveredto540MWEat2230thefollowingdayuponcompletionofpumpwork,andoutputof554MWeattainedat0800onthe13thofAugust.Unitoperatedatapproximately94'oCTPbyrodwithdrawaluntil2200onthe19thwhenareductionto450MWeviareactorrecirculationflowoccurredinordertowithdrawshallowcontrolrods.Preconditioningfrom461MWewasinitiatedandstationoutputof537MWewasreachedat0540onAugust21.UnitoperatedatthispowerleveluntilAugust27whenacoastdownto92~oCTPwasinitiated,tomeetnewpower/flowlimitationsbasedonscramreactivityconsiderations.However,afurtherreductionstoapproximately80>~powerwasrequiredwhen¹11ReactorRecirculatingPumphadtobetakenoutofserviceat1735duetoapumpcoolerleak.Theplantwasderatedto84'oCTPfromthe27ththroughtheendofthemonth,andoutputwasatapproximately485MWeduringthisperiod.
