10/18/2004 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE PNO-II-2004-010 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of possible safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by Region II staff (Atlanta, Georgia) on this date.

SHUTDOWN OF MCGUIRE UNIT 1 FOR GREATER THAN 72 HOURS On October 18, 2004, at 5:16 a.m., McGuire Unit 1 shut down in order to make repairs to an unisolable secondary system leak from a socket weld between the 1B steam generator channel 2 level instrument line and its root valve. The.73 gpm leak was identified through increased incore room sump levels and containment ventilation drain tank levels, subsequent chemistry samples, and several entries into containment while at power. Following the last containment entry on October 16, 2004, the licensee decided to shut down the Unit for the repair.

Unit 1 is currently in Mode 3 (Hot Standby), with plans to cool down to Mode 5 (Cold Shut down) in order to facilitate a Code repair. The duration of this forced outage is expected to exceed 72 hours8.333333e-4 days <br />0.02 hours <br />1.190476e-4 weeks <br />2.7396e-5 months <br />. The resident inspectors observed the plant shut down and will continue to followup on the licensees recovery actions.
