No: II-14-034 June 16, 2014 CONTACT: Roger Hannah 404-997-4417 Joey Ledford 404-997-4416 NRC Assigns New Resident Inspector for Summer Nuclear Power Plant Construction Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials in Atlanta have selected Timothy Chandler as one of the resident inspectors for two new units under construction at SCE&Gs Summer nuclear power plant near Jenkinsville, S.C.
The Summer plant already has one operating unit and is located about 26 miles northwest of Columbia.
Chandler joins NRC Senior Resident Inspector Rahsean Jackson and Resident Inspectors Patrick Donnelly and David Failla at the Summer construction site.
Timothy Chandler began his career in the NRCs resident inspector development program in November 2007. In March 2008, he assumed the duties of resident inspector at the Vogtle nuclear plant in east Georgia and continued in that position until being assigned to the NRCs Summer construction office.
For 15 years prior to the NRC, Chandler worked as a lead process engineer in various Department of Energy facilities at the Savannah River Site, and was involved with the radioactive startup of two different DOE facilities. Prior to SRS, he spent five years working as a contract senior reactor operator at various commercial nuclear facilities, developing and conducting licensed operator training.
Chandler is an 11-year veteran of the U.S. Navys nuclear power program, and was a qualified reactor operator on two different submarine reactor designs. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science degree in hazardous materials management.
Tim Chandler has the dedication and expertise to help ensure the remaining construction of Summer Unit 2 and 3 is completed according to NRC regulations and in a way that protects people and the environment, said NRC Region II Administrator Victor McCree.
At least two NRC resident inspectors are assigned to each operating U.S. commercial nuclear plant. They serve as the agencys eyes and ears at the facility, conducting inspections, monitoring major work projects and interacting with plant workers and the public. Resident inspectors can serve at a reactor site for up to seven years.
Construction sites have their own resident inspectors and the number assigned depends on the work at each site.
