NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION aE WASHING TON, D. C. 20M5 t
8 March 19,1981 k
h Docket No. 50-484 Mr. Phil Sawin 1
University of Wisconsin Is: Moor Stout Library 5be s
Menemonie, WI 54751
Dear Mr. Sawin:
This is to confirm our telephone conversation on March 18, 1981, regarding the termination of the Tyrone local public document room (LPDR) collection at the Stout Library. As we discussed, Northern States Power Company and the other co-owners of the proposed Tyrone nuclear power reactor have cancelled plans to build the reactor and the Nuclear Regulatory Co: mission (NRC) has revoked the construction permit issued on December 27, 1977.
For these reasons, the LPDR for Tyrone is officially closed.
When we talked yesterday, I mentioned that the Environmental Conservation Library of the Minneapolis Public Library has approached us on numerous occasions over the pact several years about establishing a duplicate Tyrone LPCR collection at their Library. They are still interested in the material and are still receiving requests from their patrons for it.
Because of this, Mrs. Julia Copeland at the Environmental Conservation Library would like to have the Tyrone documents presently housed at the Stout Library. So as not to inconvenience the staff at the University, we have asked Northern States Power Company (NSP) to arrange to have the Tyrone material packaged and forwarded to Mrs. Copeland. Mr. Sam Dean of NSP has been assigned to this project and you should be hearing from him shortly concerning the transfer.
Again, the Tyrone material is being sent to Minneapolis for information only.
The Library will not be considered an LPDR for the Tyrone material.
There is no longer an NRC need for a Tyrone LPDR.
Thank you and the other people at the University for your help over the years, and for your patience and. understanding most recently when we were required to keep the Tyrone LPDR " operational" while a final decision was being made on the request by the North Dakota Service Connission and the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission to defer the proposed revocation of the construction permit.
For your information, I have enclosed a copy of the " Order Revoking Construction Permit" which was published in the Federal Register _ on February 10, 1981.
