The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has completed its review of the
] age changes submitted by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by letter dated r bruary 11, 1997, in response to NRC comments on the Vicinity Pro)erty e
Completion Report (CR) for vicinity property RF-508 (north of Old Rifle Mill Site) in Rifle. Colorado.
NRC concurrence on this CR is required because DOE applied supplemental standards during remediation.
Supplemental standards were applied in order to leave tailings contamination (approximately 52 cubic yards over 310 square feet) on the stee) to vertical and very unstable slope of the 100 foot bluff that borders the lighway right away and comprises much of this property.
DOE remediated the contaminated area in the compound at the top of the bluff, but decided to apply supplemental standards on the slope based on criteria a, b and c of 40 CFR 192.21.
Based on its review of the CR. and the information provided by DOE's response to comments, the NRC staff concurs that remediation of the vicinity property, which includes the a) plication of supalemental standards, was completed in accordance with the EPA standards.
