Dear Ms. Schmidt:
Recently the Monticello Nuclear Power Plant in Monticello, Minnesota was shut down due to an incident where welds broke causing a control box to impact a steam pipe.
Fortunately, the system automatically shut down and there were no injuries. This incident has caused concern in my district. I have the pleasure of representing the Prairie Island Indian Community. This tribal community is located on an island in the Mississippi River and shares the island with a nuclear power and storage facility operated by Xcel Energy.
The Monticello and Prairie Island facilities, although different in design, are similar in age. I am writing to request information on the incident at Monticello and the applicable concerns to the facility on Prairie Island. Please provide me with background information on the incident in Monticello as well as the response taken to address any problems. In addition, if any of the Monticello facility's problems are applicable to the Prairie Island facility, please outline what precautions will be taken to assure the same incident does not occur at this facility.
