Dear Ms. Ellis:

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) is reviewing an application to renew the operating licenses for Limerick Generating Station, Units 1 and 2 (Limerick), which are located in Limerick Township of Montgomery County, PA, approximately 35 miles upriver from Philadelphia.

Limerick is operated by Exelon Generation Company, LLC (Exelon).

The application for renewal was submitted by Exelon in a letter dated June 22, 2011, pursuant to Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 54 (10 CFR Part 54). As part of the NRC's review, a site-specific supplemental environmental impact statement (SEIS) to its Generic Environmental Impact Statement for License Renewal of Nuclear Plants (GElS), NUREG-1437, will be prepared under 10 CFR Part 51, the NRC's regulation that implements the National Environment Policy Act of 1969, as amended. The SEIS will include an analysis of environmental issues, and in accordance with 36 CFR SOO.S(c), will include analyses of potential impacts to historic and cultural resources.

Under NRC regulations, the original operating license for a nuclear power plant is issued for up to 40 years, and the license may be renewed for up to 20 years. The current operating licenses for Limerick will expire in October 2024 for Unit 1 and June 2029 for Unit 2. Exelon has no plans to change current operations during the license renewal period, intends to use existing plant facilities and transmission lines, and has no plans to construct or disturb undeveloped portions of the site. According to Exelon, any maintenance activities would be limited to previously disturbed areas of the plant site. Please see the enclosed maps and pictures, which show the area under review. Since your Tribe has historic ties to Pennsylvania, the NRC is requesting comments on its environmental review.
