Subject:

Summary of Call with NEIOn Febuary 15, 2018, NRC staff had a call with representatives of NEI. The purpose of the call was to discuss anticipated schedule and resource impacts associated with the inclusion of Class 1 piping within the scope of 10 CFR 50.69 LARs. During the call the following items were discussed:

-Purpose of the call is to discuss scheduler impacts associated with inclusion of Class 1 piping in 10 CFR 50.69 LARs

-NRC has had consistent messaging on risk-informed initiatives that our ability to be successful and meet initial schedules is dependent on adherence to guidance and established precedent -Deviations from guidance and precedent such as inclusion of Class 1 piping represent a project schedule risk for in-house reviews -It is generally more efficient to explore deviations outside of plant-specific reviews -Solutions developed by these interactions could then be applied through plant-specific LARs -NRC staff indicated that another way of addressing new issues would be to "pilot" the issue on a single plant-specific review on a longer schedule

-Using a single plant to "pilot" the issue would allow the remainder of the in-house reviews to maintain their existing review schedules
