PROGRAM SCOPE This was a routine, unannounced inspection of a company that was licensed to provide a variety of services, including but not limited to, instrument calibration, sealed source leak-testing, sample analysis, and characterization, decommissioning and remediation activities.
The licensee was in possession of several exempt quantity check/reference sources which were stored in a locked cabinet, and performed licensed activities periodically through each calendar year. PERFORMANCE OBSERVATIONS The inspector toured the licensee's equipment and source storage room, and observed the RSO conduct a physical inventory of several check/reference sources and verified that each source was accounted for. The RSO described the licensee's training program for occupational workers, and the inspector reviewed records of initial and annual radiation safety training.
The inspector conducted interviews of the RSO and Alternate RSO about the licensee's radiation protection program, possession and calibration of radiation survey instrumentation, use of personal dosimetry as applicable, training program, and the performance of periodic surveys of the sealed source storage cabinet ans storage room. The RSO stated that the licensee is planning to amend its NRC license to remove authorization for decommissioning and remediation activities, possibly downgrading their licensed activities.
No violations or NRC requirements were identified.
