Thereference samplesprovidearunningbackground whichmakesitpossibletodistinguish betweensignifi-cantradioactivity introduced totheenvironment fromtheoperation oftheplantandthatintroduced bynucleardetonations orothersources.Duringtheyearof1988,1787sampleswereobtainedandanalyzed.
437ofthesesampleswereanalyzedbyagammascan.Inaddition, 16EPA'Interlaboratory Comparison Studiessampleswereanalyzedandreported.
Thesamples.includedair,water,fallout,fish,vegetation, milkanddirectradiation.
Therewasnosignificant difference betweenon-siteandoff-sitesamplesandnopositiveresultswerefoundthatwereduetoplantoperations.
Theconcentrations ofradioactive materialintheenvironment resulting fromplantreleaseswerecalculated fromthemeasuredreleaseratesanddilutionfactors.Thesecalculated concentrations couldnothavebeendetectedbecauseofthemagnitude andfluctua-tionsofthebackground orbecausetheywerebelowthesensitivity oftheanalyticprocedures.

Theseareessentially thesameastheupstreamanddownstream valuesof2.24and2.35pCi/liter astheyfallwithintheerrorbandof+2sigmaandrangeofthemeasurement.
Forallbatchreleases, thecalculated averageconcentration inthedischarge canal'from theidentified activitywas0.058pCi/liter.
Thenormal'2sigmavariation" in'the=activity calcula-tionofcomposite samplesis0.84pCi/liter or15.timestheaverageconcentration addedbyreleasesfromtheplant.'Samplesoftapwater,thenearestwell,andthecreekwhichcrossesthesitewerecollected andanalyzedmonthly.Theresultsshow.noindication ofplantinfluence.
TheseresultsarelistedinTablesVAandVB.Gammaisotopicanalysiswasdoneoneachmonthlysampleandbiweeklyormonthlycomposites ofweeklysamples.ThesearelistedinTableVIIandseparated bysourceofsample.FALLOUTFalloutisatermusedtodenoteradioactive materialsettlingfromtheatmosphere totheground.Atthesamplingstations, thefalloutsettlesasdust.oriscollected withrainfallbyafunnelandbottle.Therearetwoon-sitesamplingstationsandthreeoff-site.
Falloutgenerally increases inthespringmonthsduetotransferoffissionproductsfromtheuppertotheloweratmosphere inconjunction withincreased rainfall.

Thirty-nine TLDbadgesarecurrently placedinfourringsaroundtheplant.Theseringsrangefromlessthan1000feetto15milesandhavebeendispersed soastogiveindications ineachoftheninelandbasedsectorsaroundtheplantpotential population exposures shouldanexcessive releaseoccurfromtheplant.Badgesarechangedandreadafterapproximately 3monthsexposure.
TLDlocation47isinfluenced byitscloseproximity totheContaminated Equipment StorageAreaestablished in1983andwillnormallyread40-60mRem/quarter.
Fortheyearof1988,omittinglocation7,on-siteexposurerangedbetween11.0and18.3mrem/quarter,withanaverageexposureof14.2mrem/quarter andoff-site10.0to18.5mrem/quarter withanaverageexposureof12.9mrem/quarter.

Interference fromotherradioactive isotopeshasmadetheresultssuspectinthattheyarebiasedhigh.Thecountingprocedure isnotspecificforIodine-131 andotherisotopesmayaddtothecountrate.Attemptstodetermine thehalf-life oftheactivityinthesampleisdifficult becauseofthelowcountingratesinvolved.

Theannualdosetothethyroidofaninfantwhichcouldresultfromthemeasuredplantreleaserate,wascalculated bythemethoddescribed intheOffsiteDoseCalculation Manual.Themaximumresultant annualthyroiddosefor1988wouldbe0.007mremusingthecow-milk-infant pathway.Theannualaverageplantreleaserateduringthegrazingseasonwouldgiveaconcentration
=of<0.005pCi/liter ofIodine-131 inmilk,whichisbelowtheLLDforthisanalysis.
LAKEONTARIOFISHFishcaughtnearthedischarge canaloutfallwerefilleted, andcountedforgammaemittingisotopes.
Acomparison todataforfishcaught15milesandmoreawayfromtheplantshowsnoindication ofplantinfluence sinceneithercobalt-60 orcesium-134weredetected.
Somesamplesofbothindicator andbackground fishhaddetectable amountsofcesium-137.
