However,duringthereviewofthepost-EDMexamination data,higher-than-previously recordedgrindoutsignalswererecorded.

GENE-955-002-0195 NINEMlLE1FEEDWATER NOZZLEANALYSISThisdocumentsummarizes theevaluations performed byGEontheNineMileUnit1Feedwater nozzle.Theevaluations werebrokenintwoareas.ThefirstwastheGENozzleModelingofZones1thru5andthesecondwasamanualassessment ofthedeepestgrindoutintheSWFeedwater nozzle.FEEDWATER NOZZLEMODELINGGENozzleModelinganalysiswasperformed oninsidediameter(ID)surfacesoftheNineMile1Feedwater nozzleidentified asZones1thru5.TheIDsurfaceareaofintereststartedattheintersection ofthereactorpressurevessel(RPV)IDsurface-to-nozzle taperareaofZone1andextendedintothenozzleboretotheSafeEndregionofZone5.Theultrasonic parameters (beamandrotationangles)usedinthemodelingwereoptimized toobtainthebestoverallcoveragewiththeleastamountofscanningsetupswhich,inthelongrunaffectsthescanningtimeandtheradiation exposurerecieved.

Withtheseparameters, theentireinsidediameter(lD)surfacewillbeexaminedwithsoundbeam-to-flaw angleswithintheboundsdetermined onGE'sfeedwater nozzlemockup.TheboundrylimitsfortheGENozzleModelingaredocumented inGE-NE-C3100016-02.

Nottakenintoaccountwereanyrestrictions thatwouldimpairtheUTexaminations.

GE'sexperience hasbeenonnozzleswithrestrictions, supplemental manualmethodstogetherwiththeGERIS2000havebeenabletoobtain100%coverage(fromatleastonedirection).

GRINDOUTANALYSISModelingDuetothecomplexgeometries producedbygrindouts, manualmethodswereusedtoanalyzethebottomIDsurfacesofoneofthedeepestgrindouts.

Theanalysisprocessinvolvedthefollowing steps:1.Constructing a3dwireframe oftheNineMile1feedwater nozzle.

Thepolylinewasconstructed usingthedimensions takenfromamoldmadefromthisgrindout.

3.Three-Dimensional UTbeamraytracingwasperformed ineightpositions alongthelengthofthegrindout.

Thisdata,represented as3dlineswasalsoinsertedintothe3dwireframe.

Fourlocations wereplotted(Figure1)withthescanfromthenozzleODblendradius(Z2A),fourlocations wereplottedwiththescansfromthenozzleODcylinerical surface(Figures2and3).4.ThelocationatwhichtheUTbeamintersects thebottomofthegrindoutisthendetermined.

Atthislocationtheangleofgrindoutsurfaceismeasured(NIDANG)andtheaxisofapostulated axialflawiscalculated.

,5.Thealphaandbetaanglesofthesoundbeamtotheflawaxiswhichdetermine theeffectiveness oftheUTbeamarethencalculated.

Todemonstrate thedetection offlawsinthebottomgrindouts, electromagnetic discharge machine(EDM)notchesweremadeinthebottomoftwogrindouts inanozzlemockup.Withthesamedesignparameters asusedontheNineMile1Feedwater nozzle,theareaswereexaminedwiththeGERIS2000(Figures4and5).Examinations withtheGERIS-2000 wereperformed preandpostEDM.Asexpected, duringthereviewofthepreEDMexamination data,lowlevelsignalamplitudes inthegrindoutareaswererecorded.

However,duringthereviewofthepost-EDMexamination data,higher-than-previously recordedgrindoutsignalswererecorded.

Ingeneral,theseUTsignalsrecordedwere:1.Higherinamplitude thanthegrindoutsignals(4xor12dB);2.Accompanied byTip-diffracted signalsfromthenotchtip;and3.Mode-converted UTsignalsfromthenotchwereobserved.

Therewasclearlyasdifference betweenthepreandpostexamination withtheGERIS-2000 astothepresenceornotofreflectors inthebottomoftheGEnozzlegrindouts.
