LILCO REPORT AND REQUEST FOR TEMPORARY DEFERRAL Late in the day on Friday, August 12, 1983, Emergency.

Diesel Generator 102 was undergoing tests following the installa-tion of new cylinder heads.

In the course of the test, the engine experienced vibration and load fluctuations.

The operators reduced load and then removed the engine from service.

The engine was allowed to cool overnight and, on Saturday morning, August 13, it was examined.

The inspection _ revealed a failure in the crankshaft in the vicinity of.the no. 7 cylinder.

Evidence of the failure was a crack that completely severed the shaft.

An investigation of this failure is underway..

The cauce of the crankshaft failure is not yet known,

-nor does LILCO know at this time how soon it will be'possible to. reach a conclusion concerning the cause or the ramifications of the failure.

In light of all this, LILCO believes it'is l

appropriate, and therefore requests, that the schedule for

)

litigation of the cylinder head cracking issue, including the

{

filing of testimony, be held in abeyance temporarily until more can be learned about the crankshaft event.

On the basis-1 of a telephone conference with Mr. Daniel Brown, Law Clerk to the Board, and all parties, LILCO believes-the Staff and the County concur that this is appropriate.

LILCO suggests that a telephone conference of the Board and parties be scheduled at I

a time convenient for the Board on Friday, August 26, 1983 for the purpose of considering an appropriate schedule.
