Request for information on archaeological resources

Dear Mr. Kaltman:

With respect to your request for information concerning the identification of archaeological resources in the Millstone Point area, the following information is provided.

In general, the Niantic River - Niantic Bay area is regarded as a highly sensitive archaeological area with six known pre-historic archaeological sites existing within one mile north of "The Bar" on both banks of the Niantic River.

In that four of these sites have been identified as having contained burials, this area should be regarded as possessing a high potential of yielding significant archaeological information on Connect-icut's prehistoric populations.

A survey undertaken by a Northeast Railroad Corridor archaeological consultant has iden-tified a prehistoric archaeological site at Bay Point.

The Historical Commission has preliminary site information concerning the potential existence of two prehistoric archaeological sites (site #6037 and #6081) which may be located in the immediate Millstone Point area; the archaeological survey inventory sheets for these two sites have been included for your information.

In addition, the Niantic River Railroad Bridge has been determined to be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places by the Secretary of the Interior.

As no systematic survey of Connecticut's archaeological resources has been undertaken to date, little information exists as to the distribution and density of Connecticut's prehistoric archae-ological resources.
