DUKE PCHElR C01PANY McGuire Naclear Station Diesel Generator lA Special Report On Octrber 17, 1988 at 0855, Diesel Generator (D/G) 1A was started for an operability test (Start Attspt No. 698) and subsequently tripped. thit I was at Mode 5, 0% power at the time of the trip.

A work request was written to identify the problem.

It was deternined that the diesel engine trip occurred 20 seconds after starting due to a loose wire on a jacket water punp discharge pressure switch. Since the pressure switch is bypassed in the esergency mode, the trip was an invalid failure.

Maintenance was performed on the pressure switch agraximately a mcmth prior to the trip and the associated wire was not adequately terminated, cat. sing looseness.

'Ihe pressure switch is covered by a preventive maintenance program with a two year frequency.

After determining the cause of the trip, the inmediate corrective action taken was re-termination of the wire and calibration of the pressure switch. Due to the isolated nature of t:ds incident no se;,equent actions are planned.

After a test run for troubleshooting following corrective action, the diesel generator operability test was restarted at 1535 (start #700) and successfully empleted. Diesel generator lA was declared operable at approximately 1730 on October 17, 1988.
