Dear Mr. Herbst:
This is in reference .to your letter dated January 30, 1987,. requesting-

information on the Nuclear Regulatory Comission's :(NRC) licensing process to perform industrial radiography. To be-issued a specific license by the NRC ifor the use of byproduct material (sealed sources) and devices for performing industrial radiography, you must apply for an NRC License by submitting Form NRC-313 " Application for Material Licensing" (enclosed).
To assist you in preparing-your application for a specific license for performing industrial radiography, I have enclosed Regulatory Guide 10.6, proposed revision 2 entitled " Guide for the Preparation of Applications for the Use of Sealed Sources and Devices for Performing Industrial Radiography."
- This regulatory guide will provide you with information that will enable you to have an understanding of the specific regulatory requirements and licensing policies that apply to industrial radiography. I have also~ enclosed the NRC regulations (10 CFR' Parts 19, 20, 21, 30, 34, 40, 71 and 170) applicable to radiography. Fonn NRC-313, when completely filled out, should be signed and dated by a representative of your company who is authorized to sign official
-documents.
Paragraph 170.17(a) of 10 CFR Part 170 requires that an application fee be paid in full. Please refer to Paragraph 170.31_" Schedule of Fees for Material License and Other Regulatory Services" to determine _the amount of the fee that must-accompany your application. One copy of your application, with all attachments, should be retained by you, since the-license will require as a condition:that the licensee follows the statements and representations set forth'in the application and any supplement to it. The original and one copy should be mailed to the Region III office: U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Region III, Material Licensing Section, 799 Roosevelt Road, Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137.
After you are issued a license, your program must be conducted in accordance with the terms and conditions of the license, NRC regulations and the statements, representations, and procedures contained in your application.
Please note that the information supplied above involves the regulatory and licensing process that is regulated by NRC. If you wish to obtain information on the radiographic exposure device and its use, you should contact the manufacturers of the devices. The following are the names of two manufacturers that can be contacted to offer you assistance: Atomic Energy of Canada, LTD.,
Elk Grove Village, Illinois, and Gamma Industries, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
