NRC ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON REACTOR SAFEGUARDS

TO MEET IN BETHESDA, MD, MARCH 5-7

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Advisory Committee on

Reactor Safeguards (ACRS) will hold a technical meeting March 5-7

in Bethesda, MD.

The meeting, which is open to the public, will be held in

Room P-110, 7920 Norfolk Avenue.

As part of the meeting, the committee will meet with the NRC

Commissioners from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on March 5 at the NRC

Commissioners' Conference Room, 11555 Rockville Pike, to discuss

an ACRS report on the use of design acceptance criteria during

design certification reviews, the status of proposed plans for

implementation of the NRC quantitative safety goals for nuclear

power plants, and ACRS-NRC staff interface.

(ACRS meeting schedules are subject to change. Anyone

planning to attend should confirm the schedule the day before the

meeting by calling 301/492-8049.)

Although meetings of the ACRS are open to the public, they

are not part of the NRC's public hearing process. The ACRS, an

advisory group to the Commission, conducts independent, highly

technical reviews of safety considerations related to nuclear

facilities. While members of the public may attend the meeting,

the committee will consider only oral or written statements

limited to specific matters set forth in a Notice of Meeting that

will be published in the Federal Register on February 26.

On Thursday, March 5, from 8:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m., the ACRS

chairman will comment on items of current interest.

From 8:45 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., the committee will discuss a

proposed ACRS action plan to review and report on policy issues

identified by the NRC staff for certification of passive nuclear

power plants.

From 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, the committee will discuss

integral systems testing requirements for Westinghouse

Corporation's standardized nuclear power plant design designated

AP-600.

From 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., the committee will discuss

topics to be taken up with the NRC Commissioners.

From 4:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m., the committee will discuss

priority rankings proposed by the NRC staff for a group of

generic issues.

From 6:15 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., the committee will discuss

proposed ACRS reports to the NRC regarding items considered

during this meeting.

On Friday, March 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 1:00

p.m. to 3:00 p.m., the committee will meet with representatives

of the NRC staff and General Electric Company to discuss its

proposed design for an advanced boiling water reactor.

From 3:15 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., the committee will discuss

future ACRS activities.

From 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., the committee will discuss a

proposed alternate plan for implementation of the NRC

quantitative safety goal policy.

From 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., the committee will discuss

proposed ACRS reports to the NRC regarding the NRC safety

research program and matters considered during this meeting.

On Saturday, March 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the

committee will discuss proposed reports to the NRC.

The meeting may include closed sessions, if required, to

discuss proprietary information.

Executive Director, Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards,

when a transcript is being kept. The use of still, motion
