Dear Mr. Knighton:

The Reference (1) letter provided the staff's evaluation of the high range noble gas monitors (Kaman Instrumentation) for Palo

Verde, and determined that the instrumentation installed at Palo Verde did not recently meet all of the requirements of Items II.F.l of NUREG-0737.

APS has reassessed the design of the high range noble gas monitors and agrees that a modification is required.

This modification is required to incorporate the modifications suggested by the manufacturer (Kaman Instrumentation) to extend the range of detectable and measurable noble gas concentrations above 80 Kev photon energy as discussed in Reference (2).

'These modifications are expected to be installed in the plant prior to fuel load.
