l The purpose of this letter is to provide advance notification of the second of two shipments of spent nuclear fuel by Iowa State University. The information required by 10 CFR 73.72 is provided on the Shipment ID form which is enclosed. The governor's designees of the states in which the shipment will pass will be notified per 10 CFR 71.97(c) and (d).

The shipment is of a quantity of SNM of moderate strategic significance However, arned escorts for the l

shipment have NOT been arranged since the unshicided dose rate from the contents of tie package does NOT exceed 100 rem per hour at 3 feet as specified in 10 CFR 73.37 (a). 'Ihe in-transit physical protection of the SNM has been arranged in accordance with the requirements of 10 CFR 73.67(e)(3). The l

enclosed route, which was approved by the NRC, will be used even though the shipment is NOT a highway route controlled quantity.

As with other recent spent fuel shipments that have passed though the state of Tennessee, the TransCom l

satellite tracking system will be used to track the progress of the shipment.
