NRC STAFF TO MEET WITH SOUTHERN NUCLEAR MAY 17 TO DISCUSS

COMPANY CORRECTIVE ACTIONS FOLLOWING JANUARY EVENT

AT HATCH PLANT

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled a meeting with Southern Nuclear

Operating Company officials in Atlanta May 17 to discuss the companys specific corrective actions

following an unplanned shutdown on January 26 of the Unit 1 reactor at the Hatch Nuclear Plant near

Baxley, Georgia. Unit 1 automatically shut down when a valve in one of the two main lines carrying

water to the reactor closed, and some of the equipment did not operate as expected. The NRC sent an

Augmented Inspection Team, or AIT, to review equipment performance, operator actions and company

response to the event .

The meeting will begin at 9:00 a.m. on May 17 in the NRC Region II office, 61 Forsyth Street,

Suite 24T20 in Atlanta and will be open to observation by the media and public. NRC officials will be

available at the conclusion of the meeting to answer any questions.
