Farley, Unit 2, has three Westinghouse Model 54F replacement steam generators, each containing 3,592 thermally treated Alloy 690 tubes. These steam generators (SG) were installed in 2001. The tubes have an outside diameter of 0.875 inches, a wall thickness of 0.050 inches, and they are supported by stainless steel tube support plates and stainless steel anti-vibration bars.

The NRC staff has the following note as a result of reviewing the aforementioned submittals:
Secondary side inspections identified approximately 272 foreign objects in the three steam generators. These objects were located at the top of the tubesheet (87), in the sludge lance filter (124), and in the feedring (61). Approximately 234 of these objects were removed from the steam generators and approximately 38 objects remain. These latter objects are locked in hard sludge. The licensee assessed the potential for these indications to result in tube wear and concluded that tube integrity would be maintained until the next scheduled steam generator tube inspections in refueling outage 21.
Based on a review of the information provided, the NRC staff concludes that the licensee provided the information required by the Technical Specifications. In addition, the NRC staff concludes that there are no technical issues that warrant follow-up action at this time since the inspections appear to be consistent with the objective of detecting potential tube degradation and the inspection results appear to be consistent with industry operating experience at similarly designed and operated units.

SUMMARY

OF THE STAFF REVIEW OF THE STEAM GENERATOR TUBE INSERVICE INSPECTION REPORTS FOR REFUELING OUTAGE 18 FARLEY NUCLEAR PLANT, UNIT 2 TAC NO. MD8695 DOCKET NO. 50-364 By letter dated November 1, 2007, to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)

(Agencywide Document Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML073050415), Southern Nuclear Operating Company (the licensee) submitted information summarizing the results of the 2007 steam generator tube inspections performed at Joseph M.

Farley Nuclear Plant (Farley), Unit 2, during refueling outage 18. Additional information regarding the steam generator tube inspections was provided by the licensee in a letter dated August 18, 2008 (ADAMS Accession No. ML082320487).

The licensee provided the scope, extent, methods, and results of the Farley Unit 2 SG tube inspections in the documents referenced above. In addition, the licensee described corrective actions (i.e. tube plugging) taken in response to the inspection findings.
