McGaffigan was first appointed to his position on August 28, 1996, and has been reappointed for an unprecedented two additional five-year terms.
 
Chairman Dale Klein presented the Distinguished Service Award before a crowd of NRC colleagues, staff and invited guests. Commisioners Merrifield, Lyons and Jaczko also made presentations, and several Congressional leaders sent their congratulations.
