-SPECIFIC SUPPLEMENT 50 TO THE GENERIC ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT FOR LICENSE RENEWAL OF NUCLEAR PLANTS REGARDING GRAND GULF NUCLEAR STATION, UNIT 1 (TAC NOS. ME7385 AND ME7386)

Dear Mr. Mulligan:

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff has completed final plant

-specific Supplement 50 to NUREG

-1437, "Generic Environmental Impact Statement for License Renewal of Nuclear Plants (GElS),"

regarding the renewal of operating license NPF

-29 for an additional 20 years of operation for Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (GGNS), Unit 1. Enclosed is a copy of the final supplement and the associated Federal Register Notice of Availability.

This notice advises the public that the final supplement is publicly available at the NRC public document room (PDR) or from the NRC's Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS). ADAMS is accessible from the NRC website at http://www.nrc.gov/reading

-rm/adams.html. The Accession Number for final Supplement 50 is ML14328A171. In addition, the Harriette Person Memorial Library, 606 Main St., Port Gibson, Mississippi 39150, has agreed to make the final supplement available for public inspection.

As discussed in Chapter 9 of the final supplement, the recommendation is that the adverse environmental impacts of license renewal for GGNS are not great enough to deny the option of license renewal for energy

-planning decisionmakers. This recommendation is based on:

(1) the analysis and findings in the GElS; (2) review of the GGNS Environmental Report; (3) consultation with Federal, State, local, and Tribal agencies; (4) the NRC staff's independent review; and (5) the NRC staff's consideration of public comments received during the scoping process and on the draft supplement.
