Nine Mile Point Unit 2 Docket No. 50-410 Gentlemen:

Enclosed is the information requested by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff regarding the Nine Mile Point Unit 2

Rockwell wye pattern globe type Main Steam Isolation Valves.

The report addresses several issues that were discussed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff on March 20, 1987:

l.

A comparison of the Nine Mile Point Unit 2

Rockwell Main Steam Isolation Valves to Rockwell valves used at other nuclear power plants for this service.

2.

A compilation of industry leak rate testing results and experience.

3.

An evaluation of items 1

and 2

above and a comparison to the NUREG 1169 analysis performed for Unit 2, including an estimate of leakage performance over the first operating cycle.

4.

A discussion of the maintenance practices planned at Unit 2

to enhance leakage characteristics.

This information is provided to support the NRC's evaluation of the need for the installation of a Leakage Control System for Unit 2.

Niagara Mohawk has concluded, based upon its assessment contained

herein, that a

leakage control system for the MSIV's is not required'he enclosed report supplements information previously provided on March 18, 1987 regarding the radiological assessment of Main Steam Isolation Valve leakage.
