NRC 16E BULLETIN 79-09 FAILURES OF GE AK-2 BREAKERS IN SAFETY-RELATED SYSTEMS
REFERENCE:
(1) Power Authority letter JAFP-79-247 dated May 18, 1979
Dear Mr. Grier:
In reference (1) the Power Authority responded to NRC isE Bulletin 79-09 concerning the failures of General Electric AK-2 breakers in other nuclear power generating stations.
Reference (1) outlined the preven'.ative maintenance program for GE AK-2 breakers in effect at the James A.
FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant.
As committed to in reference (1), preventative maintenance in accordance with procedure EP-008 ' as been performed on all GE AK-2 breakers in safety-related applications at JAFNPP. There were no conditions found during the performance of this preventative maintenance which would have prevented any of these breakers from performing its intended function.
Also, the causes for breaker failures described in l&E Bulletin 79-09 were not found to exist in any of the safety-related breakers which were examined.
The preventative maintenance program for AK-2 breckers outlined in the Power Authority's previous response will continue to be followed to ensure that these breakers continue to perform as designed.
