ROUTINE SAFETY INSPECTION AT THE LA CROSSE BOILING WATER

REACTOR (INSPECTION REPORT 50-409/98001(DNMS))

Dear Mr. Berg:

On April 20,1998, the NRC conducted an inspection at your permanently shutdown La Crosse

Boiling Water Reactor nuclear plant which examined SAFSTOR activities. The enclosed report

presents the results of that inspection.

During this inspection, activities in the areas of facility management and control, spent fuel

safety, and radiological safety were examined.

Overall performance during decommissioning activities was very good. Focus and effort in some

areas were limited, which was consistent with the limited activities being performed while the

plant is in SAFSTOR. All activities inspected were conducted in compliance with the

Decommissioning Plan, the Quality Assurance Program and the Technical Specifications.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the Commission's regulations, a copy of this letter and the

enclosed inspection report will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
