1980 figures are complete count figures from the 1980 of Popula-tion and Housing.

Estimates and census counts for place and/or MCD pieces within counties have been summed to the county level.

In cases where there

')-

have been annexations, deannexations, incorporations, disincorporation, cor-i j

rections to the 1980 census counts, and/or successful challenges to the 1982 l

or 1984 estimates, they have been carried through as appr priate, so that the l

numbers for each year reflect the current geography and c anges to the popula-l tion for each place.

Therefore, what is shown here for 1980 vill not neces-I sarily match what has been previously published in CURRENT POPUIATION REPORTS, I

q Series P-26.

y 3

1986 Population Estimates:

The estimates were prepared using procedures the.t rely on measuring components of population change.

They utilize statistics on births and deaths by residence to estimate natural increase, federal income

+

tax returns to estimate net internal migration, and reported immigration stat-7 istics to estimate not migration.

For the first time, the estimates are rounded to the nearest ten.

.4Y Per Capita Income Estimates:

The 1985 per capita income (PCI) is the esti-f mated average amount per person of total money income received during the cal-sndar year 1985 for all persons residing in a given political jurisdiction.

4 The 1985 estimates are based on the 1980 census and have been updated using yc.

rates of change developed from various administrative record sets and compila-tions, mainly from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Bureau of Econo-mic Analysis (BEA).

.a The PCI estimates are based on a money income concept.

Total money income is 4

defined by the Bureau of the Census for statistical purposes as the sum of:

4 o Wage or salary income o Net nonfarm self-employment income o Net farm self-employment income o Interest, dividends, and net rental income o Social Security and railroad retirement income o All other regularly received income such as Veterans' payments, pensions, unemployment

-1 compensation, and allmony

[" R2ceipts not counted as income include various " lump-sum" payments, such as capital gains or inheritance.

The total represents the amount of income M_ received before deductions for personal income taxes, Social Security, bond Purchases, union dues, Medicare deductions, etc.

Bureau of the census per capita income estimates are not comparable with per I

capita income estimates from other sources, such as the Bureau of Economic Analysis personal per capita income estimates.

topulation estimates for 1986 and per capita income estimates for 1985 will be oublished la~te this year by the Bureau of the Census in CURRENT POPULATION LEPORTS, Series P-26, for all cities'and for functioning county subareas such is townships and New England towns.
