Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Items of Interest Week Ending March 29, 2024 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Staff Held an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Mediation Session with Mistras Group, Inc On March 21, 2024, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff held an alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mediation session with Mistras Group, Inc., and their outside counsel (collectively Mistras) to discuss the results of an investigation conducted by the Office of Investigations that was documented in a Choice Letter issued on December 7, 2023 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML23340A106). The issue involves the falsification of calibration certificates for a type of testing equipment used at nuclear power plants. Two former Mistras employees were prosecuted and convicted by the Department of Justice. Mistras chose ADR to resolve the apparent violation discussed in the Choice Letter. The NRC staff and Mistras successfully reached alignment on the agreement in principle and the required actions that will be memorialized in a confirmatory order.
NRC Staff Hosted a Bi-Monthly Public Meeting Related to the Reactor Oversight Process (ROP)
On March 26, 2024, the staff hosted a public meeting related to the Reactor Oversight Process (ROP) to discuss: recent operating experience related to safety and relief valve failures (ML24080A099), ongoing efforts related to centralized inspections (ML24074A470), a recently published Operating Experience Smart Sample on Digital Instrumentation and Controls, and the path forward on revising reporting guidance for Degraded and Unanalyzed Conditions (ML24081A148). Industry representatives presented an update to FAQ 23-03, a Turkey Point Unplanned Scrams Performance Indicator (ML24081A161), for NRC consideration. Attendees included representatives from the Nuclear Energy Institute, NextEra Energy, and members of the public. The next bi-monthly public meeting on ROP-related matters is tentatively scheduled for May 15, 2024.
TerraPower Submitted a Construction Permit Application for Kemmerer Power Station Unit 1 On March 28, 2024, TerraPower, LLC (TerraPower), on behalf of US SFR Owner, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of TerraPower, submitted a construction permit application for Kemmerer Power Station Unit 1 (Kemmerer Unit 1). Kemmerer Unit 1 would be sited in Lincoln County, Wyoming. The Kemmerer Unit 1 project would be used to demonstrate the TerraPower and General Electric-Hitachi Natrium sodium fast reactor technology and is supported by the Department of Energys Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program.

Office of Administration Items of Interest Week Ending March 29, 2024 Veracode FedRAMP Static Code Analysis On March 25, 2024, contract number NNG15SC92B/31310024F0024 was awarded to ThunderCat Technology, LLC in Reston, VA. The purpose of this contract is to purchase the Veracode platform, which allows NRC to review, assess and verify the state of application development security. The period of performance is from April 1, 2024, through March 31, 2025, with four option periods. The total potential value of the contract can be up to $1,334,205.65.
