SUBJECT:

QUAD CITIES NUCLEAR POWER STATION DECLARATION OF AN UNUSUAL EVENT FOLLOWING A FIRE ON THE UNIT 2, 125V DC BATTERY On Thursday, May 22, at 4:13 a.m. CDT, the Quad Cities Nuclear Power Station declared a Notice of Unusual Event (NOUE) due to a fire in the Unit 2, 125V DC battery room (Event Notice (EN) 57728). At 3:59 a.m. CDT, the site was performing discharge testing of the batteries, when the control room received a fire alarm. Personnel in the battery room observed sparks and a flame on one of the battery cells. The onsite fire brigade responded to the scene and extinguished the fire by 4:22 a.m. CDT. Offsite fire assistance was not required. The NOUE was terminated at 5:20 a.m. CDT. No personnel were injured. The licensee is investigating the cause of the fire.

Unit 2 remained at full power with no complications as the battery was already out of service for testing/maintenance, and the station was aligned to the alternate 125V DC battery. There were also no impacts to Unit 1 as a result of the event.

This event had no negative impact on the public.

NRC Resident Inspectors responded to the site and verified that the plant was in a safe condition and that plant personnel were operating in a manner consistent with protecting the health and safety of the public. The resident inspectors, with assistance from a regional electrical specialist, continue to monitor the licensees investigation and repair efforts.

State and county officials have been notified by the licensee.
