SUMMARY
OF WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC COMPANY 2024 FUEL PERFORMANCE UPDATE CLOSED MEETING (EPID L-2024-NTM-0003)
On September 11-12, 2024, a closed annual hybrid meeting between Westinghouse Electric Company (Westinghouse) representatives and U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff was held to discuss Westinghouse fuel performance.
On September 11, 2024, Westinghouse representatives presented proprietary information regarding Westinghouse fuel performance and plans including information on the future topical report (TR) submittals. Westinghouse representatives provided updates on the Westinghouse high energy and accident tolerant fuel programs including updates on the coated cladding TR and Westinghouse alignment with industry to support Electric Power Research Institute Alternative Licensing Strategy for fuel dispersal, and licensing schedule. In addition, Westinghouse representatives provided updates on the departure from nucleate boiling predictive modeling using machine learning technology, pressurized water reactor (PWR) fuel performance codes and methods, boiling water reactor (BWR) fuel performance codes and methods including BWR technology roadmap, and update on TRITON11 fuel. Additional presentations included an overview of the AP300' small modular reactor fuel, Lutetium-177 production in vintage Westinghouse reactors, and updates on eVinci micro reactor and Cobalt-60 production in Westinghouse PWRs. On September 12, 2024, the NRC staff that attended in person participated in the tour of Westinghouse Churchill facility.
