U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Division of Fuel Facility Inspection LICENSEE PERFORMANCE REVIEW Why We Did This Review The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is responsible for protecting the health and safety of the public and the environment by licensing and regulating the civilian uses of radioactive materials.
The NRC conducts regular inspections of the Westinghouse Columbia Fuel Fabrication Facility.
These inspections are part of the NRC's program to ensure the safe operation of licensed fuel cycle facilities.
OVERVIEW The 2024 Licensee Performance Review was completed recently, looking at all inspections during calendar years 2022 and 2023 at Westinghouse Columbia Fuel Fabrication Facility.
In addition to the inspections and performance review, the NRC Senior Project Inspector has biweekly phone calls with the company and other regular communications.
For more information from the NRC please call the Westinghouse Senior Project Inspector, Tom Vukovinsky 1-404-997-4622
During this 2024 Licensee Performance Review several key points were noted.
- The inspections were thorough, covering various aspects of the facilitys operations, safety measures, and emergency preparedness.
- Inspectors evaluated the facility's operational safety program, focusing on compliance with federal regulations and the facility's license conditions.
- The facilitys emergency preparedness program was assessed to ensure it meets NRC requirements and the conditions outlined in their license.
- Inspectors evaluated the effectiveness of emergency drills, equipment readiness, and staff training.
The findings from the 2022 and 2023 inspections at the Westinghouse Columbia Fuel Fabrication Facility indicate an adequate adherence to safety and regulatory standards. No significant violations were found.
The results of our review will be discussed at a public observation meeting scheduled for April 10, 2024. Although the site had no areas needing improvement for this current review cycle, the Westinghouse management will be granted the opportunity to discuss the facilitys performance.
