- 1. Review and approve the minutes of the previous committee meeting (December 7th, 2022).
The RSO distributed the minutes of the December 7th, 2021 RSC meeting for review and approval. Dr. Kot inquired about the D.C certificate that was requested by the manufacturer of the new XRD. Mr. Haleem replied that such a request was met by sending a copy of the certificate to that Company. The minutes were unanimously approved.
- 2. Review the renewal applications submitted by Dr. Tanja Horn
- a.
Co-60 sealed source
- b.
X-ray irradiator The RSO informed the committee members that both applications were submitted previously twice and were approved. The only changes are the users who are new and took the online training for radioactive material. However, those listed on the application did not take online training for x-ray. Therefore, the approval is conditional upon those users taking the x-ray training and then will be issued radiation dosimeters badges.
The application for Co-60 sealed source use and possession was approved by Mr.
Louis Alar and seconded by Mr. Bernard Guay.
- 3. Update on the extension request for license SNM-164
The RSO informed the committee members that he sent out an email to NRC Region I inquiring about the 5-year extension request of the SNM-164 license and that NRC replied that the request could be submitted by email. The RSC committee members unanimously approved the submission of the 5-year extension request. Also, along with the extension request, the NRC will be provided with an update on the change of the chairperson of the RSC.
- 4. Update on the Decommissioning Funding Plan (DFP)
The RSO informed the committee members that the DFP has been reviewed, revised and updated to account for new cost estimates for labor and equipment. The update resulted in an increase of approximately $20,000 relative to the previous cost estimate. The funds currently set aside by the University in a PNC Bank account reserved for this purpose are still sufficient to cover the new cost estimate.
- 5. NRC inspection scheduled for June 2022 Mr. Haleem, informed the committee members that NRC will visit the CUA campus on June 6 to conduct an inspection of all the activities under the three current NRC licenses granted to CUA. The RSO will send an email to all active authorized users to inform them about this inspection. The RSO inquired about the status of the Mossbauer source (Co-57) source given that the authorized user has retired. Dr.
Penafiel replied that VSL will respond to the RSO before the inspection date.
