OF JANUARY 25, 2022, PUBLIC MEETING ON DRAFT REGULATORY ISSUE

SUMMARY

ON OPERATIONAL LEAKAGE AVAILABLE FOR PUBLIC COMMENT UNDER FEDERAL REGISTER DOCUMENT 2022-00686, CITATION: 87 FR 2361.

On January 25, 2022, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff held a virtual Informational Meeting with a Question-and-Answer Session with the public. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the draft Regulatory Issue Summary (RIS) on operational leakage which is available for public comment under Federal Register Document 2022-00686, Citation: 87 FR 2361. The meeting notice and agenda, dated January 11, 2022, are available in the NRCs Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) under Accession No. ML22018A082. A list of attendees is provided in the enclosure. The draft RIS is publicly available under Accession No. ML21166A122.

During the meeting, the NRC staff presented information (ADAMS Accession No. ML22024A484) about the draft RIS, took questions and comments from members of the public, provided answers, including clarifications, and explained the process for providing formal comments on the draft RIS to the NRC through the Federal Register. Public comments were regarding backfit concerns, whether rulemaking would be more appropriate, and case specific application of the requirements.

CONTACT: Jay Collins, NRR/DNRL (301) 415-4038 The NRC staff explained that the Federal Register public comment period for this item ends on March 15, 2022, and that the NRC was not actively soliciting comments towards regulatory decisions at the meeting. All formal public comments to be considered by the NRC would be required to be submitted through the Federal Register process. As such, the NRC staff did not make any regulatory decisions or commitments at the meeting.
