PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION July 9, 2021 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE - PNO-III-21-001A This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. Some of the information may not yet be fully verified or evaluated and is basically all that is known by the Region III staff on this date.

SUBJECT:

UPDATE: UNPLANNED SHUTDOWN GREATER THAN 7 DAYS DUE TO MAIN STEAM LEAKAGE Donald C. Cook Nuclear Plant, Unit 2, was restarted on July 7, 2021. Unit 2 was shut down on June 22, 2021 to repair a steam leak in the Turbine Building.

The licensee made repairs to the steam piping. Plant operators commenced a startup and the reactor was made critical on July 7, 2021. The unit was synchronized to the electrical grid on July 8, 2021. The Resident Inspectors were on site and monitored portions of the repair and startup activities.

Donald C. Cook Unit 1 remains at full power.

The State of Michigan has been notified.

This preliminary notification is issued for information only and no further action by the staff is anticipated.

The information presented herein has been discussed with the licensee and is current as of 3:25 p.m. EDT on July 9, 2021.
