This refers to the special safety inspection conducted by Messrs. T. Coppola,
K. Parkinson, K. Sullivan and J. Ulie of this office on September 22-26, 1986,
of activities at Byron Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2, authorized by NRC
Operating License No. NPF-37 and NRC Construction Permit No. CPPR-131 and to the
discussion of our findings with Mr. R. E. Querio at the conclusion of the
inspection. Additional status information concerning the inspection findings
were discussed on October 30, 1986, during a telephone call between
Mr. Mel Pietraszewski and a member of the Region III inspection.

The enclosed copy of our inspection report identifies areas examined during
the inspection. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of a selective
examination of procedures and representative records, observations, and
interviews with personnel.

No violations of NRC requirements were identified during the course of this
inspection.
