DESCRIPTION OF PROBLDt Upon disassembly of the 1A RC Pump, the lower gasket caused the lower gasket j

seating surface to be pushed down forming a bump ( 13 mils in height and 30 in are) on the stuffing box seating surface.

This problem was suspected to have occurred during disassembly because:

1.

An additional force over the deadweight of the pump of 15 tons was required to break the pump loose.

The pump stuffing box then cocked in the casing.

An additional force over the deadveicht of the pump of 20 tons was then required to break the pump free.

About 6-8 tons of additional force was required to break the 1B and 2B pumps free.

2.

The lower gasket had extruded up into the registered fits and was actually coined into the stuffing box and casing.

Additional galling vas caused about 180 from the coining on both pump stuffing box and casing.

See Attachment A.

3.

The gasket dimensional checks revealed that the gasket had been compressed j

uniformly at all circumferential locations.

Also, the casing showed no

" hole" in the corresponding location to the stuffing box.

The Bingham field representative examined the deformation.

He determined, using a straight edge and a 11Eht, that the deformation was on the outer periphery of the seating surface.

In his opinion the problem could be a

corrected by honing the affected area.
