Open Item Response:

(SRP 6.2.1; Containment Systems Branch)

Dear Sir:

We have enclosed a supplementary response to the open item ragarding the containment differential pressure resulting from an inadvertent operation of the containment spray. The initial response to this item was submitted in Reference (b).

This open item was discussed with representatives of the Containment Systems Branch in meetings conducted on January 10-12, 1983.

The enclosed response will be included in a future amendment to the OL Application.

Very truly yours, YANXEE ATOMIC ELECTRIC COMPANY

-r4 9) h The conte? ament is normally maintained at a slight positive pressure oy sne Containment On-Line Purge Subsystem. See FS.ut Section 9.4.5.2.C.2.

With this system in operation, the containment is maintained at a nominal positive pressure of 0.5 psig with high and low pressure alarma at 0.65 psig and 0.35 psig, h

respectively. Accordingly, if this system is in operation, the initial pressure

, a inside containment in always positive as an initial starting condition.

However, because the above system is not redundant, the analysia f,or this event is based upon an initial containment ambient pressure of 14.7 f84f ' Initial

temperatures and relative humidity are 1200F and 90%. The analysis utilised the containment free volume, geometrical data and passive heat sink data as ES-provided in FSAR Tables 6.2-1, 6.2-3 and 6.2-4.

b u

8k Both spray trains are assumed to operate with a maximum flow rate of 3300 spa kk-L!'

per train. The analysis assumes the total capacity of the refueling water storage tank of 475,000 gallons is available for spray at a Ne/magtemperature h

of 500F (see FSAR Section 6.2.2.3).

Using the computer code CONT ltAST-5-NOD-1, e

the minimum resultant containment pressure of 12.1 paia results from the inad-vertent actuation of sprays.

f V

The above event produces a negative pressure differential of 2.6 psig. Thia is to be compared with the containment structure design differential. pressure of r;

g-negative 3.5 peig (see FSAR 8ection 6,2.1.1,b.5).

This provides a nominal p:g negative pressure margin of 0.9 pais.
