90 Day Response

Dear Sir:

By letter received January 17, 1980 Boston Edison was required by the NRC to address IE Bulletin 79-01B. This Bulletin requested two responses, a 45 day and a 90 day, with information as requested by Enclosure 1 of the Bulletin.

Reference 1) and its attachment provided our 45 day response.

In Attachment 1 to this letter Boston Edison is providing its 90 day response for Pilgrim Station. We have been unable to supply all the information requested by the NRC at this time.

Reference 1) outlined 3 priority levels for equipment:

I - Equipment inside containment II - Equipment outside containment located in compartments where pipe breaks occur.

III - Equipment outside containment located in adjacent compartments which experience reduce! effects of these pipe breaks.

For each of these categories a review process was established which involves each of the following:

~

A.

Listing of systems and equipment required to function.

B.

Development of hostile environmental profiles.

An initial review of equipment capabilities to quickly identify com-ponents which may not be capable of functioning in the hypothesized environments.

D.

A formal review of equipment to ve 1:y and document equipment capabilities in these environments.

E.

Verification as necessary, of actual installations.

F.

Further review of equipment to identify components and materials susceptible to significant aging.

The status of the work progress to date is as follows:

- For Priority I (Equipment inside containment) Categories A, B, C, D and E are essentially complete.

- For Priority II and III Categories A, C, D and E are essentially complete.

Boston Edison will provide its next submittal by July 25, 1980.

Reference 1) generically discussed the difficulties in acquiring information for Pilgrim equipment.

Boston Edison resources have been distributed among numerous short term activities including refueling outage work and NUREG-0578 modifications. Vendor resources have become strained by similar requests for information from other utilities. For older vintage plants, such as Pilgrim, vendors must search both their own plus subvendor records which may be over 10 years old.

In many cases this work required Boston Edison to issue purchase orders for these searches.

As you are aware Pilgrim Unit #1 is presently in a refueling outage.

The information presented in Attachment I references equipment which we believe will be inservice at the completion of this outage.

If, due to scheduling, activities are not completed or dditional activities are undertaken which affect the information contained herein we will ammend the enclosure with a clarifying letter to the NRC.

s C ETON ETII'ON COMPANY Mr. Boyce H, Grier, Director April 22, 1980 Page 3 Boston Edison believes that the quality of the information to be provided and the confidence level we..

all place on these reviews are directly related to the thoroughness of these evaluations, We believe the content of our responses to date under 79-01 and 79-01B indicates our commitment to reporting and rectifying any conditions which. our reviews indicate may in-volve unqualified equipment, Very truly yours, j
