June 19, 1980 BEco. Ltr. #80- 109 Mr. Boyce H. Grier, Director Office of Inspection and Enforcement Region I U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, PA.

19406 Docket No. 50-293 License No. DPR-35 Response to IE Bulletin No. 80-07 "BWR Jet Pump Assembly Failure"

Dear Sir:

On March 26, 1980, Pilgrim Station conducted both a visual inspection by TV camera and ultrasonic examina aon to assess the integrity of the jet pum;s as required by the subject IE Bulletin. During the inspection and examination, deficiencies were identified on jet pumps 1, 3 and 15 and these three (3) de-ficient jet pump beam assemblies were subsequently replaced in kind.

Because of the predicted initiation and propagation rate for jet pump beam cracks, provided by our NSS vendor, beam failure is not expected during the next operating cycle.

As discussed with members of your staff, to establish a surveillance program which will serve as an early warning of jet pump performance problems it is necessary to accumulate a data base to provide current drive-driven relationships for the recirculation pumps and jet pump calibration. This data base collection began during startup following the refueling outage and the data base will be broadened j

during operation. The accumulated data is incorporated into the surveillance I

program for daily evaluation of jet pump performance.

If this surveillance in-dicates a problem, individual jet pump performance data is utilized as the final l

determination of possible jet pump beam cracking.
