Roman Environmental Review Branch Division of Fuel Cycle Safety, Safeguards and Environmental Review Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguard United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington D.C. 20555-0001 VIA ELECTRONIC MAIL RE: Section 106 Consultation for Special Nuclear Materials Relicensing, Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation, Rancho Seco, Sacramento County
Dear Ms. Roman:
The United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is initiating consultation with the State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) in its effort to comply with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (54 U.S.C. §306108), as amended, and its implementing regulation found at 36 CFR Part 800.
The NRC are proposing to renew a Special Nuclear Materials license to the Sacramento Municipal Utility District to account for spent nuclear fuel storage at the Rancho Seco Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation for the next 40 years. No ground disturbance or modifications to the built environment are associated with this action.
The NRC is requesting the SHPOs concurrence with their determination that the proposed license renewal has no potential to affect historic properties assuming they are present. Upon review of the provided information, the SHPO acknowledges the receipt of the NRCs license renewal notification but offers no comment or concurrence on the NRCs finding of effect.
If there are any questions, contact Ed Carroll at (916) 445-7006 or Ed.Carroll@parks.ca.gov.
Sincerely, Julianne Polanco State Historic Preservation Officer
